Fields

FieldTypeRequiredDefaultAllowed valuesDescription
kindSkyKindyesprocedural, hdr, color, atmosphereWhere the sky comes from. "procedural" is an analytic daylight sky, costs no bytes and knows its own sun direction. "hdr" is a Radiance .hdr equirectangular panorama named by asset. "color" is a single flat colour in every direction, which is what a scene written before this change renders as. "atmosphere" is a physically based sky (settings in atmosphere) that the HD renderer draws from the sun through the air, with aerial perspective; the standard renderer draws it as the procedural sky with a matching haze.
presetSkyPresetnoclear-noon, golden-hour, overcast, dusk, nightNamed procedural sky, so a swap is one word: clear-noon (the default), golden-hour, overcast, dusk, night. Ignored by the hdr and color kinds. Absent with kind "procedural" and no sun means clear-noon; a sun or turbidity written beside a preset overrides that part of it. With kind "atmosphere" it is a time of day: the sun's angles, a cloud layer, the air's haze and a fog, each used only where the scene wrote nothing of its own (sun, clouds, atmosphere.preset, atmosphere.haze and visibilityKm, meta.environment.fog). golden-hour: sun 8 degrees up, fair clouds, haze 1.2, light-haze fog. overcast: 35 degrees, an overcast deck, a hazy atmosphere at 25 km visibility, light-haze. dusk: 2 degrees, broken clouds, valley-mist. night: -12 degrees, fair clouds. clear-noon: 60 degrees, nothing else. Absent changes nothing.
assetstringnoThe envmap asset holding the panorama, required by kind "hdr" and ignored by the others. meta.environment.envMap is the deprecated spelling of this field.
intensitynumberyesScalar multiplier on the whole environment — background, diffuse and specular alike. 1 is the sky as authored; 0 is an unlit black dome. Must be finite and not negative. Changing it costs nothing, so it is safe to drive from a slider.
rotationnumberyesRadians of yaw applied to the entire sky, the sun included, about +Y. Use it to turn an HDR panorama's horizon to suit the level without re-exporting the file. Must be finite; it wraps, so any value is in range.
sunFromSkybooleannoWhen true, the scene's first directional light takes its direction, colour and intensity from the sky's sun, so swapping the sky relights the scene coherently. Absent means true for a procedural or atmosphere sky in a scene that authored no directional light, which the dome alone lights at about a fifth of daylight, and false otherwise: a scene that authored its own light keeps it, and an HDR panorama already carries its sun. A sky below the horizon (dusk, night) turns that light off rather than lighting from underground.
sunSkySunnoExplicit sun position for a procedural or atmosphere sky, overriding the preset's (an atmosphere sky without it has clear-noon's sun). Ignored by the other kinds, which have no analytic sun — an HDR's sun is found by searching the image.
turbiditynumbernoAtmospheric haze for a procedural sky: 1.8 is pristine, 2.5 a clear day, 6 hazy, 10 overcast. Must be within 1.8..10. Ignored by the other kinds.
atmosphereSkyAtmospherenoSettings of an atmosphere sky; absent means earth-clear. Ignored by the other kinds, as preset is outside procedural. With this kind the HD renderer reads the directional light's intensity as the sun's illuminance outside the atmosphere, and the atmosphere dims and colours it on the way down (the usual convention). The standard renderer falls back to the procedural sky with turbidity mapped from the preset and haze.
cloudsSkyCloudsnoA layer of volumetric clouds, for an atmosphere sky; absent means a clear sky. The HD renderer draws them over the sky, lets them shade the sun on the ground, in fog and in the reflected and bounced light, and lights the scene's ambient from them. The standard renderer and the other kinds ignore them (a warning, render-clouds-without-atmosphere, when the kind is not atmosphere).
backgroundSkyBackgroundnoWhat the sky looks like behind the scene, in place of its own drawing, on any kind; the sky still lights the scene (its fill, reflections and sun follow kind and the rest as before). A fog with no color fogs toward the background's horizon. The standard renderer draws it; HD draws its own sky and says so once. Absent: the sky draws itself.
